I was looking for a reporter microphone to use for mobile interviews at events, such as the Red Carpet at Mario Armstrong’s Never Settle Show. My requirements were that it should have low handling noise so it would not pick up sound from my movements, and be omnidirectional, meaning I could hold the mic in between interviewer and interviewee and have it pickup sound equally from both parties.
The Electrovoice RE50 is an industry standard reporter microphone used in radio and television. In this video, I talk about why I chose this mic. I test it out by recording from the mic, through an iRig Pre into my iPhone 7. I compare the resulting recording to one made just talking into the iPhone 7 through the phone’s built-in mic. The sound quality is superior using the RE50 as expected.
